TERMINATION TOOL

The Final Critical Step
Sentinel Connector RJ45 Termination Tools

RJ45s.com

Two types of RJ45 (8P8C) plugs and installation tools (used for crimping the plug onto a cable) are commonly available: Western Electric/Sentinel Connector (WE/SCS) and Tyco/AMP. While both types look remarkably similar, the tooling used to install the two different plug types is mutually exclusive and cannot be interchanged between the two types. WE/SCS compatible plugs are available from a large number of manufacturers, whereas Tyco/AMP plugs are produced exclusively by Tyco Electronics. Both types of modular plugs will plug into the same standard 8P8C modular jack.

WE/SCS and Tyco/AMP RJ45 (8P8C) plugs have different spacing for the cable strain relief. As a result, using a WE/SCS crimp dieset on a Tyco/AMP RJ45 plug will crush the top of the connector and damage the crimp dieset, and vice versa. While the WE/SCS compatible plug is produced by a larger number of manufacturers than the Tyco/AMP plug, it is still important to know what style is being used to avoid damaging the plug or tool during crimping.

DO NOT TAKE THIS STEP FOR GRANTED

Many times, cable assemblies are built using inadequate or poor quality tools and dies.....worn out tooling.....or mismatched tooling. THIS WILL HAVE A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CABLE ASSEMBLY. Here are a few examples.....if the tooling is worn out, the blades (contacts) will not be set to the proper nominal dimensions as set forth by the FCC Part 68.5 (included in TIA-968) . In addition, worn out or mismatched tooling might actually "peel off" part of the RJ-45 plastic insulation ("orange peel effect") thereby covering the contact with the plastic causing intermittencies or loss of signal. NOTE: POOR QUALITY TOOLS AND DIES WEAR OUT VERY QUICKLY.....and they should be monitored for usage and expected useful life.

Ratchet Style - Controlled Cycle Hand Tools

All of Sentinel Connector Systems tooling is made with PRODUCTION GRADE STEEL and the DIE SETS have a MINIMUM EXPECTED LIFE OF 1,000,000 TERMINATIONS. Each factory built tool is "MATCHED UP" to the plug it is designed to terminate.....and if you follow termination instructions properly, you will get a properly terminated cable assembly that meets all of your electrical and mechanical specifications.
