By knowing the Category type and a few key cable dimensions...INSULATED CONDUCTOR DIAMETERS (with tolerances) and OVERALL CABLE JACKET OD'S you can define the "best fit" for the plugs. Sentinel Connector Systems offers the broadest line of RJ45 plugs in the industry that can accept insulated conductor diameters ranging from .024" (normally 28 AWG) all the way to .062" (normally 22 AWG).
Background and Research
"The Application dictates the Cable Used...and the cable DEFINES the "right plug to Use". Proper cable/conductor matching is critical to achieving the desired electrical performance in each application. Any mismatch may cause “conductor slippage” creating “hot spots” whereby the conductor “slips” right or left on the contact blade or misses the conductor completely. This may result in intermittencies (ouch!), cause resistance levels to spike creating undue temperature rise and potential signal integrity issues that may cause network downtime.
